Akkadian 2350 B.C. to 2200 B.C.

A draft of the army of Sargon the Great and his successors. The most relevant innovation of this period is the introduction of the composite bow. The Sumerian type battle wagon seems to fade away, being probably relegated to ceremonial use. The Stele of Naram-Sin, commemorating Naram-Sin's victory over the Gutians of the Zagros Highlands, depicts the Akkadian army as composed by spearmen, marching in ordered fashion, and bowmen with axes, in a 50-50 proportion. The King Naram-Sim is depicted shooting with a bow, that seems to indicate that this new weapon was considered devastating. In the list, "ummanu" are subjects or levies.
