Andalusian Spanish 1030AD to 1350AD

By 1050AD, Muslim Andalusia was under intermittent assault by the Northern Christian Kingdoms of Spain. Failing military capacity led the Emirs to call for help from Africa on two disastrous occasions, with the Africans taking over the Southern Islamic states prior to moving on the Christians. The Andalusians imitated the Christian neighbours favouring well-armoured cavalry and infantry and even adopting the crossbow to an extent those al-Khatib claims it was more common than the bow. Al-Labbana and Ibn-Hudyal, contemporary 14th century authors, also mention large numbers of bow armed cavalry (some being crossbows). This favouritism is assumed to extend to the close order infantry formations. The sling is referred to as a popular weapon by the authors mentioned above.
