In approximately 300 BC, due in part to Roman pressure in the west and in part to the lure of Hellenistic riches, several Celtic tribes began moving east into Thrace. By 285 BC, due to the constant chaos of the successor states, Thrace was conquered. Seuthopolis, ancient royal capital of Thrace was sacked and many Celts began to settle in Thracian lands. There were three mentioned Celtic Kings in Greece: Brennus, Acichorios and Cerethius. In 279 BC, Brennus and Acichorios lead many of the Celts into Greece where they defeated Greeks and Macedonians and plundered as far the shrine at Delphi until being defeated by Antigonus III in 278 BC and forced through Bithynia into Asia Minor where they would become known as Galatians. However, those Celts that remained in Thrace established their capital at Thylis in 273 BC and continued to rule until defeated by the Thracians sometime in the late 3rd or early 2nd centuries BC (depending on the source). By a study of burials and coins, it appears that there was a strong presence of both Celtic and Thracian presences in the region as well as a strong criss-crossing of influences (perhaps leading to the Dacians).
