This list represents the Saxons of continental Europe from the adoption of denser, heavy infantry formations until the wider use of cavalry. The Saxons of the continent continued to rely on good, close order foot far longer than their Frankish cousins in Europe and nobles continued to ride to battle but dismount to fight. This may have been due to their isolation on the fringes of what was then Western Germany, their proximity to the Danes who also maintained a strong predilection for infantry or the dense and wooded nature of their terrain. At any rate, the Saxons took to heavy cavalry tactics later than their neighbors, and at the close of this period, still had a strong infantry component. The Saxons fought near continual wars with the Slavs and Prussians on their borders. Saxons served as enemies and allies of the Armorici, Merovingians, Carolingians and later Franks.
