Medieval Scandinavian Kingdoms 1050 AD through Age of Chivalry

This list fills the gap in the Age of Chivalry lists for the armies of the various medieval Scandinavian Kingdoms of Denmark, Sweden and Norway. It covers the period when the old 'Viking' kingdoms gradually moved towards a more Western Medieval style of warfare and mail armour was replaced by plate.

A number of different Scandinavian armies from both the ToC and the AoC periods can be fielded using this list. These include: seperate Danish, Norwegian and Swedish national forces campaigning against each other as well as abroad up to the union of the 3 Crowns in the 1390s; it covers Swedish settler armies in the eastern Baltic through the C12th and early C13th and is also designed to cover post 1390's combined armies as well as post 1390's Swedish rebel forces.

Danish settler armies in the Eastern Baltic and Baltic States are best portrayed by using the Baltic Crusader list.

It can also be used to portray the later Christian Viking Kingdoms of the C11th and early C12th as well (including the army at Stamford Bridge) and as such can also be used in Triumph of Cavalry (see Notes below).

Huscarls are included in the Bonus to allow for a Swedish rebel army to be fielded (which would not field them) and Danish armies which discontinued the use of Huscarls late in the C11th. Huscarls were out of general usage by the mid C13th. If any Huscarls are fielded the General may only attach to the Huscarls. As Huscarls would not generally be fielded in later armies, each FT Xbow unit fielded requires that a Huscarl unit be dropped from the Bonus list. Huscarls cannot be fielded in the same army as MAA or more than 1 HC.

The Core & Bonus FV6 'Leidang' include Retinue & Hearth troops and also 'Hirdmen' all of whom would be included in the Shieldwall. The FV6 +2 protection Leidang represent the better armoured troops - like those found in the mass burial pit at Wisby (in coats of plate and kettle helms). Swedish Leidang were also renowned for their stubborn defence.

A maximum of 2 units of Bonus FT Leidang with Bow or Xbows may be fielded. Early armies would have more Bows, later armies more Xbows. A C15th army must convert the Core FT Leidang with Bow to Xbow.

All Huscarls, Leidang and Landevaernet may all form Shieldwall.

Landevaernet was a general levy of all able bodied adult males. If any Landevaernet are bought all must be. Si Slings can only be bought if Landevaernet are used. If Landevaernet are not bought then the Si Slings do not count towards the extra bonus Light Division requirement.

Obudshaer were a select levy of younger single men, raised specifically for overseas or foreign campaigns. They cannot be used in the same army as Landevaernet and if any Obudshaer are bought all must be. Obudshaer are BP3 move 9" WB.

The FT (Germans) units can also represent Flemish mercenaries. If both FT (Germans) units are bought, the MAA and at least 1 unit of Si Xbow must also be bought.

Obudshaer, FT (Germans), dismounted MAA and HC fielded in an AoC army cannot form shieldwall. Dismounted HC in a ToC army may form shieldwall.

Xbow armed troops, MAA, more than 1 FT (Germans), more than 1 Bonus HC and the Obudshaer cannot be purchased if this army is used in the Triumph of Cavalry period. The LC Xbow and Si Xbows do not count towards the extra bonus Light Division requirement if the army is fielded in the ToC period.

Danish armies would generally have more cavalry and no Huscarls but would field more German mercenaries & allies.

Swedish & Norwegian armies would generally field less cavalry (even in the latter part of this period) - so are limited a single Bonus HC.

Swedish rebel armies cannot field any HC or MAA or Huscarls.

Those players interested in fielding an Icelandic force are referred to the Highland & Galwegian list.
