This list represents the Ordonnance reforms of Charles the Bold (or Rash). Burgundian forces were a varied inharmonious mix of national contingents, mercenaries, allies, ‘refugee’ and even still some feudal contingents. Despite Charles’s passion for ‘modern’ military thinking & equipment, he was not a particularly good battlefield tactician or a very lucky general. However, his reputation is probably worse than it should be as he was unlucky (or foolhardy) enough to go head-to-head 3 times with probably the most effective military force of his time, the Cantonal Swiss.

The Ordinances specified a ratio of 1 Pike:1 X-bow :1 HG – however in reality it proved difficult to hire the numbers of hand gunner proscribed and the numbers were often made up of additional Pike – which were primarily Flemish or ‘German’ mercenaries.

LB are either English contingents of foot LB or the mounted LB elements of the Burgundian lance, both have stakes

X-bow and HG troops were either native Burgundians; Italians or ‘Germans’.

HG count as X-bows in all respects

Although Burgundian Ordonnance ‘lances’ were specified as containing Coustilliers and Mounted Archers (armed with both LB & X-bow), it is generally recognised that they formed up and fought in combined formations. The Mounted Archer LB elements of the Burgundian Ordonnance ‘lance’ are assumed to already be depicted dismounted as the core & bonus LB units.

However, as an alternative it is possible to field the mounted elements of the ‘lances’ separately. This can be depicted by halving the numbers of core & bonus Kn(d!) and for each Kn(d!) unit fielded, the following must be added:

1 – HC(d!) [k] (Coustilliers) 4(0)0 +1 Lance @ 10

1 – LC(#) [k] (Archers) 1(0)0 +1 X-bow @ 6

(#) - LC*(Archers) dismount as SI [k] 2(1)1 +2 X-bow @ 6pts

If any ‘lances’ are fielded as separate elements, all must be. If any element of an individual separated ‘lance’ (except LB) is fielded dismounted all must be dismounted

RG - can be depicted as an artillery ‘park’ with earth & timber bulwarks – such as the ‘Grunhag’ at Morat
