This list covers the more overt militarization of the Papacy in the face of Frankish and Norman incursions into Italy until 1300 when most of the Italian states had, at least in theory, freed themselves from the German yoke.
The Popes enjoyed varying popular support and, more often than not, had to rely on mercenaries from throughout Europe to fill their ranks.
The most famous battle fought by the Popes in this period was the Battle of Civitate fought on June 18, 1053. Although commanding some of the finest troops of Europe, Pope Leo IX was defeated and captured by the Normans under Humphrey of Hauteville.
