The Triumph of Cavalry should have a Gepid army to fight the Goths and Byzantines, Avars and Lombards. The Gepids were related to the Goths and Jordanes (a Goth source) says that the name derives from gepanta in Gothic meaning slow because they were the last to cross from Scandinavia. That is hardly likely, however, they were Gothic in style and language. From the 360s they were dominated by the Huns, and seem to have integrated quite strongly with them, adopting such cultural niceties as skull elongation, a Hunnic fashion. (Or the archaeology may mean that Huns doing this intermarried and lived among them. The Gepid moment on the world stage was their leadership of the revolt against the sons of Attila in 454 where they fought successfully at the Nedao. They then occupy Dacia and some of modern Hungary and are a power in the region until their defeat by the Lombards and Avars in a two pronged invasion in 565. They then survived as subjects of the Avars for a while. Archaeology seems to show that they had a narrower, but richer upper class than the Lombards and more foot - both bows and spears. The author has gone for FT rather than WB as, at the battle against Goths in 489 Ad the Gepids occupy a river line and make a static defense and that sort of fits well with the slow Gepids gibe. The Heruls are especially fierce light armed troops and again do not seem to sound like warband. The option of a form of LHI is an attractive way of showing this.
