This list represents the Isles from the generally accepted date of the amalgamation of Norse and Celtic peoples in the Isles (approximately 1000 AD) until the final submission to the Scottish Kingdom in 1493 AD.
The Isles vacillated from independence to various forms of submission to Norway or the Kingdom of Scotland. The kingdom included the Isles and west coast of Scotland, but at various times also include large tracts of the Highlands and lowland Scotland.
Islemen campaigned frequently as both allies and enemies of The Highland Clans, the Vikings in Dublin, Orkney and Man, Galloway and the more stable Scottish Kingdom of the Lowlands.
The most famous of the Islemen leaders was Somerled. Somerled became the King of the Isles in 1156 after sustained campaigns against Isle Chiefs, Vikings and Scots. After a successful invasion of Scotland, Somerled was killed in battle with the Scots at Renfrew in 1164.
