Late Lombard South Duchies 775 to 1076 AD

The main source for this list is a very well done article about the Norman conquest of southern Italy written by Di Giovanni Amatuccio in 1998 which offers a wide range of historical sources in the Bibliography.

Lombard duchies were by now fractured in several smaller feudal states and armies were now little more then garrison units fighting in defense of their own cities. Because of a fear of upsetting Charlemagne, the Principate of Benevento under Prince Arechi paid submission to the empire but only formally to the point of fighting off an attempted return of Adelchi helped by the Byzantines. But, in fact, until the Norman conquest, these states were independent and often at war with each other.

Since all the true Lombards were now considered Noble and their number had decreased noticeably, they were now less prone to dismount from their horses and join their subjects to fight on foot. So, Lombard Knights are no longer allowed to Dismount and the (d) notation has been removed from the Lombard Knights.

Lombard HC are not subject to the Obligatory Charge rule.

All Norman HC are subject to the Obligatory Charge rule.

Dismounted HC offer limited support to Peasants because the latter were not trained to fight side by side with other units, so Peasants CAN'T increase their FV when flanked by dismounted heavy cavalry.

(#) The Squires forming core/optional selections are the same men who can be deployed as either HC or FT. You can take a maximum of 2 Squire HC or 2 Squire FT or a combination of both for Core and for Optional variable selections.

(*)Since the Byzantines were generally at war with the Normans and Arabs from Sicily, 2nd Rate Tagmatics, Prokursatores or Hyperkerastai units MAY NOT be bought if any Normans or Aghlabids are bought. In pick up games, Byzantines may not be used against Byzantine armies and Normans MAY NOT be used against Norman armies. They may always be used in tournaments.
