Marius' Mules 105BC to 100BC

The Consular Armies

Faced with the massive influx of Germans that was the Cimbri and Teutones incursion and the destruction of her Consular armies, Rome responded by raising new legions and sending her best available general – Gaius Marius, into the field. It is a question for historians as to what would have happened had the victorious Germans set their immediate goal as Italy, but while they were away in Hispania, Marius recruited legions from the Plebians and set about toughening them with drill and toil. The loads borne by his legionaries are supposed to have generated the term "Marius’ Mules".

While a good general, Marius also had a great talent for alienating the Roman military leaders and thus created division and unhealthy competition amongst his own armies. One rival general went so far as to have his name inscribed on his soldiers pila to get full credit for their work. This is reflected in this list as is the remarked upon rigorous training of his troops.

A reading of Plutarch's Lives of Marius and Sulla, clearly indicates that dedicated flank units and mobile reserves were used as maneuver units by the Late Republican Romans. The units denominated COH in Armati terms represent these.
