Middle Bosporan Kingdom 438 to 310 BC

This represents the army of the Spartocid Dynasty. There is a reasonable amount of source material available both in print and in archeology. As always, it is not as much as one would wish. Moreover, the translation of that material into wargaming terms consistent with the Armati rules required a certain number of judgment calls.

Notes:

*Although Scythian arrowheads began to make their appearance in reasonable quantities in burials and on coins in the 4th Century B.C., it was only in the 2d Century B.C. that depictions of mounted horse archers made their appearance on funeral steles. I have decided to be conservative and assume that it was in the 2d Century B.C. that the change to HC modeled on Scythian HC took place. Bosporan HC may not be in the same division as Scythian HC or Greek mercenaries. Scythian HC may not be in the same division as Greek mercenaries or Bosporan HC.

** Players may elect to have either the Scythian LC or the Scythian HC in the Core Units. Scythian LC must outnumber Scythian HC by at least 2 to 1. That means that if a player elects the Scythian HC in the Core Units, he must purchase at least two Bonus Scythian LC. If there are any Scythian infantry purchased, the total number of Scythian infantry units must equal or outnumber the total number of Scythian mounted units.

*** Thracian infantry may be either LHI or LI. A player must chose one option or the other but may not mix the types. They are mutually exclusive. The total number of Thracian LHI/LI and Scythian LI may not exceed 4. Thracian LHI may not exceed the total of Core and Bonus Bosporan LHI. Thracian LHI are Key units. Thracian LI are not Key units despite the annotation in the list matrix.

**** No light troops may provide support for mounted troops. This includes all LHI, LI, and SI in this list.

This army may also fight armies from the Age of Empires as it is on the cusp of the change.
