Any effort to put some historical consistency into Scottish armies, founders on the problems created by warriors scampering about on hills when facing Agricola. There are those who might reasonably infer that the Pictish army need not necessarily be represented only by solid blocks of heavy infantry just because later Scots learned their lesson from the Romans and formed up this way. For such, here is the offering below. It provides the possibility of a rare light infantry European army in this era. The use of LHI serves the belief that Picts were spear armed and recognizes the carved representations which suggest that spear and bow worked together in small units.
This list is intended to cover the transitional period when the Picts were in the process of absorbing the Caledones
All in all, the army is more powerful than it looks, contains some verified nasty surprises and goes a long way towards explaining historical Pictish success.
Those wishing to simulate the fashionable view of this army would be advised to use the Ancient British list, substituting bows for slings and allowing no more than 2 chariots.
