Notes
All Romano-British FT and dismounted Romano-British HC may form Shieldwall. If any Romano-British HC are dismounted, all must dismount.
* If any Cornish Allies are bought, all must be bought
**If any Scots-Irish are bought, all must be bought. Scots-Irish may not be used with Angles, Saxons or Jutes. Scots-Irish WB move 9", have a BP of 3, and are subject to Obligatory Charge.
***If any Angles, Saxons or Jutes are bought, all must be bought. Angles, Saxons and Jutes may not be used with Scots-Irish. All Angles/Saxons and Jutes may form shieldwall
This list is designed to represent the Celtic Kingdoms (loosely used term) in Britain after the departure of the Roman Garrison to through the Arthurian Wars and up to the establishment of the Anglo-Saxon dominance of England (roughly 410 AD until 600 AD).
There are numerous differences from the existing Romano-British Armati list.
First, the HC have been reduced in number. It was my feeling, right or wrong, that the small Kingdoms of Britain at this time would have been hard pressed to raise that much cavalry in proportion to other troops. Also, in conjunction with the small armies of the period and the historical opponents, this seemed to work.
Second, the infantry were changed from LHI to FT. This is partly in response to new thought on the Late Roman auxiliary infantry in general, where much of it is thought to have fought in the battleline alongside the legionaries (often regarded as better infantry). Additionally, the Romano-British were fighting the Germanic and Pictish infantry armies, so a move toward formed battle infantry makes sense.
Third, the FT and dismounted HC can form Shieldwall. Shieldwall was a common Dark Aged formation and is underutilized in Armati armies (I feel it was widely used in this period).
Finally, the mercenary contingents of Scots-Irish and Germans have been expanded. It was the wholesale importation of German mercenaries that caused most of the chaos of the period and led ultimately, to the destruction of the Celtic British kingdoms.
