Spartan Reformed c. 235 BC - 196 BC

The Spartan Reformed army list represents the army that arose from the reforms of King Cleomenes III. After the battle of Leuctra and the rise of the Macedonians, Sparta, due to casualties and the rise of mass armies, had faded to a minor state. In 235 BC, Cleomenes III was made a King of Sparta and by 227 BC had assumed absolute power and restored the old draconian systems. In addition, unlike most of the Greek poleis, Sparta, with a subsidy from Ptolemy III, changed directly from classical hoplites to Macedonian-style pikemen. Spartiates were the now much depleted citizen soldiers. Hippeas were the best of those citizens. Perioikoi were a sub class, 4,000 of whom were given land in exchange for service by Cleomenes III. Helots were the non citizen class who provided much of the skirmishers and in time of need, could be impressed into the phalanx (likely those with Spartan fathers). Due to a shortage of manpower, the Spartan army relied heavily on mercenaries at this time. After the death of Cleomenes III, Sparta was forced into the Achaean league until it was subjugated by Rome.
