Although expeditions had been mounted against Irish raiders before 1172, the first formal Anglo-Norman foray into Ireland occurred in 1172 AD under King Henry II. And, like they had in Saxon England and Wales, these Norman knights and their cosmopolitan forces quickly established themselves as permanent settlers. Feudalism was quickly established in lands taken by these Anglo-Norman lords, and they, with their Norman knights, Welsh and other troops soon blended with local Irish leaders and their retinues. The result was Anglicized Irish and Norman knights who were soon regarded as “more Irish than the Irish". The Anglo-Irish soon emerged as a unique and distinct feudal system.
The Anglo-Irish, along with the foreign troops that accompanied them and the Irish that joined them also incorporated “native” Vikings and Ostmen, Norse-Irish, and, as time progressed, added the ferocious Galloglaich. Soon, the Anglo-Normans were considerably Irish in custom and character and even speech. Famous Irish names, such as Fitzgerald, can trace their ancestry back to these original Norman interlopers.
This list ends with the introduction of crude artillery in 1361, which was not used to any great effect for a further century.
This list was designed to face Age of Chivalry armies, but could also face many Triumph of Cavalry armies.
