Dark Ages Welsh c. 900 - 1100 AD

This list is designed to represent the Welsh, from what would be considered the last vestiges of the Romano-British military system as their military system evolved in the face of Saxons, Viking and Irish raids. It ends with the systematic Norman encroachment of the late 11th and early 12th centuries. It is intended as a historical opponent for Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, Irish and Normans.

Notes:

There is some question as to whether the Welsh Nobles were mailed LC or traditional HC. I have allowed for either opinion. However, a player may select one option or the other, not both. Either option of Uchelwyr may dismount as FV 5 [1] 1 +2 Prot FT.

If any Welsh FT is bought, then no additional LHI may be purchased and only one half of any SI or LI with bows or Long Bows may be purchased. This is intended to represent the early evolution of the Northern Welsh as they became more dependent on spears and the Southern Welsh as they moved toward the use of the Long Bow. I considered allowing the Welsh FT to form Shieldwall, but they had a poor reputation standing up to HC, so I chose against it.

If more than 3 SI with Long Bows are present, then no additional FT and only 1 unit of Uchelwyr may be purchased to represent the early Southern Welsh armies. SI with LB do not have stakes.

*If any Saxons are bought, all must be bought. Saxons may form Shieldwall.

**If any Vikings are bought, all must be bought. Vikings may form Shieldwall.

***If any Norse-Irish are bought all may be bought. Norse-Irish may form Shieldwall.

***If any Normans are bought, all must be bought. Norman HC is subject to Obligatory Charge.

No allied contingent may be used with any other allied contingent.
