Belgae II Eburone circa 54 BC

This list was prepared in conjunction with the accompanying Belgic Nervii list. These two tribes (generically referred to as the Belgae) and their close associates were, without a doubt, the individual tribes which gave Caesar the most trouble. According to Caesar, they (particularly the Eburone) were at least partially Germanized.

In 54 BC the Eburone, working closely with their Nervii cousins, launched a surprise winter campaign against the Romans. The Eburones bluffed an entire legion (the unlucky 13th) into abandoning its winter encampment and then wiped out the retreating column as it tried to withdraw. The Nervii came very close to doing the same to the 9th. Caesar's eventually solution was to wipe out the warrior class of both the Nervii and Eburone and sell the surviving dependants into slavery en mass.
