Early Feudal Hungarian 997 AD to 1200 AD

This list covers the armies of Hungary from establishment of the Kingdom of Hungary in 997 AD by Stephen I until the Hungarian Nobility adopted the tactics (and not just the equipment) of Western European knights. Hungary was recognized by the Pope on Christmas day 1000 AD and the nation converted to Catholicism. The list is meant as a bridge between the Armati II Asiatic Hordes list of the Magyars and the Hungarian list which fought the Mongols. Hungary was further expanded in 1102 AD by uniting with Croatia. Hungary continued to maintain a large nomadic Magyar presence. Vlachs and Slavs living in the mountainous and wooded regions of the Kingdom continued to provide traditional light infantry. Urban centers were generally founded and maintained by Germans or 'urbanized' Slavs providing close order foot. The Battle of Lechfeld in 955 AD had destroyed much of the Hungarian elite and with it resistance to Feudalism. It had also showed the Hungarians the power of the Frankish knight and Stephen I and his father Geza before him began to recruit and settle German, French and Italian knights ('Franks') guaranteeing a more consistent availability. Like the Byzantines, the Hungarians settled the Asiatic Hordes that they defeated in Hungary. Collectively known as Bisseni, these peoples included Pechenegs, Cumans and others. Szekely were likely the remnants of the Avars hordes and time had done little to tame their aggressive nature.
