This represents the peasant uprising originally centered near Dobrudja led by Ivaylo B'rdokva. The rebels drove the Tatars back over the Danube in 1277. In either 1277 or 1278, Ivaylo defeated the Bulgarian Tsar Konstantin and personally killed Konstantin in hand to hand combat.
The Byzantine Emperor intervened and declared Ivan Asen III as tsar and provided him with a Byzantine army. Amazingly enough, the Bulgarian boyars united behind Ivaylo who immediately married the widow of Konstantin and was declared tsar by the Bulgars. The Byzantines persuaded those Tatars controlled by Nogai, a son-in-law of the Byzantine Emperor, to invade Bulgaria in support of Ivan Asen III. Ivaylo withdrew to a fortress in the north. The Byzantines attempted to reconcile Ivan Asen III with the boyars by appointing George Terter as despot. This so alienated the Tatar general Cavusbasi that he took the Tatar force and joined it to Ivaylo's army as an ally. Ivaylo and the Tatars crushed a Byzantine army at Devina and another in the Zygros Mountains. Being unable to take the capitol Tarnovo, Ivaylo went to Nogai's court with Cavusbasi to seek Nogai's help. While there, both were executed by Nogai at the request of the Byzantine Emperor.

{I am having trouble with the equipment of Bulgarian boyar cavalry. Some are depicted in the Manasses Bible as sitting deep in the saddle with long stirrups and lances with European looking gear. The majority of depictions in most sources show Byzantine looking gear. More than a few are shown with a bow. I am wondering if some were converting to European tactical syles like the Serbians were doing.}
