Sertorian Iberian 78BC to 72BC

Sertorius the Loyal was an outstanding general of the Marian party who found his place in Hispania. He consistently beat Metellus and Pompey who both wielded substantially larger armies and would undoubtedly have made his mark in history but for his untimely assassination by fellow Romans. At the time of his death he was negotiating alliances with the Cilician Pirates and Mithradates

Utilising a genius for training and motivation, he built an efficient army around a core of Roman infantry and dedicated lights, supported by Iberian noble cavalry, whose children were hostages (for schooling). He imposed order and discipline on his wild Iberians by the unique method of allowing them to be beaten in battle and then training the wiser remnants to fight in good order. (Plutarch - Life Of Sertorius:16). These trained Iberians were properly equipped with weapons and armour.

An organisor of light troops to rival Iphicrates and considered by Polybius to be at least on a par with other one-eyed generals such as Hannibal, Phillip of Macedon, Antigonus, and Eumenes, Sertorius encouraged his soldiers to think he was semi-divine and to reinforce this he was always accompanied by a tame white fawn - claimed to be a gift from the Goddess Diana.

Notes:

Celtiberians move 9 inches, BP3.

*Celtiberians may not be in the same division as Roman FT.

** Up to four LHI Trained Iberians may be exchanged for Raw Warriors. Thus no more than 6 LHI/LI may be bought from these two lines.

When counting the light units purchased to gain the extra light division. These two lines only count as six choices.

LHI and LI may not be in the same division.

*** Roman HC may only be used if all COH units are purchased.

Raw Warriors are purposefully not made key units to simulate their deliberate 'blooding' by Sertorius.

If a veteran unit is bought, this must always be a Spanish HC unit (Devotio)in pick-up games, but any unit of the commander's choice may be made a veteran unit in tournaments.
