The Sueves entered the Empire by crossing the frozen Rhine with the Vandals and Alans in 406 AD. They crossed the Pyrenees into Hispania in 409 AD. When the Vandals and Alans left the peninsula for Africa, the Sueves were the major barbarian power until they were faced by the expanding Visigothic presence. The Sueves (Swabians, Suebi) were a confederation of tribes. Some stayed at home in 406 and founded present day Swabia, other tribes moved West. It has been suggested that the Spanish Sueves had a large component of Quadi, a Suevic tribe that mimicked the Sarmatians. That would help explain their easy partnership with the Alans. Suevic cavalry are noted for their javelin use by Jordanes. In the peninsula the Sueves were domiciled in the North-West (Gallicia). When the Vandals left they expanded into Lusitania under king Hermeric battling against Roman forces. They were eventually pinned back in Gallicia by the Visigoths against whom they allied with the local Hispano-Roman rebels. The kingdom was finally destroyed in 585 after becoming involved in a rebellion against the Visigoths.
The Suebi were strongest in the mountainous north of the peninsula.
Despite their paganism the Suebi formed good relations with the local Gallicians who had always retained a degree of independence from Rome and later rebelled on their own account.
* These Warband are BP 4, move 6 inches.
The Suebi probably continued to wear their traditional knotted hair.
The Noble cavalry are Quadi types and would have a Sarmatian look.
